October is National Home Security Month (NHSM) and is supported by the well renowned lock and key manufacturer Yale. Leading Locksmiths are keeping you informed of the useful information provided by the scheme each week, to make home owners more aware of home security issues. Week 3 of NHSM is all about ‘Protecting Valuables‘. Leading Locksmiths provide additional advise on all matters of home security on our advice page. According to the NHSM site, 60% of burglaries that are attempted on a property with a fully operational burglar alarm, are unsuccessful. If you don’t currently have an alarm fitted it may well be worth you considering having a system installed. If you do have a burglar alarm fitted at your property, ensure you regularly check the system to keep it in good working order.
For storing smaller valuables at home such as jewellery, larger amounts of cash and important documents like passports, we would advice a home safe. Ensure that you install the safe somewhere out of site and never keep the combination for the door within close proximity of the safe itself. Larger, high value items around the home such as televisions or stereo systems should be marked up with an ultra-violet security marker, as advised on the NHSM site.
With thanks to Daniel Christensen at the English Wikipedia project for the photograph of the safe.
